Secure myID set up online

More government services are moving online, and proving who you are securely is now more important than ever. If you deal with a BAS agent or tax professional, you may already use myGov or ATO online services. To access these safely, you need a verified digital identity called myID. Until now, getting a Strong myID required a passport. For many people, that wasn’t possible. The good news is that this is changing.

Whats Changing?

Previously, a passport was required to obtain a Strong myID. You can now use your driver licence to verify your identity instead. This change has already started in Western Australia, with other states expected to follow.

Why is This Good News?

A Strong myID gives you the highest level of online security and makes dealing with the ATO much easier.

With a Strong myID, you can:

  • Access ATO services online more easily
  • Authorise your BAS agent or tax professional without delays
  • Reduce the risk of identity fraud
  • Avoid phone calls and extra identity checks

Best of all, you no longer need a passport.

What You Need to Set it Up

To create a Strong myID, you’ll need:

  • A verified driver licence (with a photo match completed in the app)
  • Two additional identity documents, such as:
    • A Medicare card
    • A birth certificate

Once verified, your Strong myID is ready to use.

How This Helps When Working With Your BAS Agent

A Strong myID allows you to quickly and securely link your identity to your BAS agent using the Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM).

This means:

  • Faster setup and fewer delays
  • Secure access to your tax and business information
  • Less paperwork and fewer follow-up requests

A Simplier Way Forward

Using your driver licence to verify your Strong myID removes a major barrier for many Australians. It’s a simpler, safer way to access government services and work with your BAS agent online.

If you don’t have a passport, this update makes getting a Strong myID easier than ever.
